Novel Science book club debuts Dec. 6

Science fiction asks “What if?” The Novel Science book club discusses fiction that says “What is.”

The NCSU Libraries, in partnership with the College of Sciences and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, is launching a new kind of book club on Wednesday, Dec. 6, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at So & So Books (704 N. Person Street, Raleigh). Novel Science aims to explore big topics at the intersection of science and society through the lens of fiction.

The event is free and open to the public ages 21 and up. Registration is required, and snacks and wine will be included.

At this initial gathering, we’ll discuss Everything Change: An Anthology of Climate Fiction. Everything Change features twelve short stories from the 2016 Arizona State University Climate Fiction Short Story Contest with a foreword by author and contest judge Kim Stanley Robinson as well as an interview with climate fiction author Paolo Bacigalupi.

“Climate science says, with certainty, that future Earth will be warmer, but it is mostly silent on how a changed Earth will look, smell, taste, and feel,” says climate change expert and NCSU Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences professor Walter Robinson, who will lead discussion of the anthology. “Speculative fiction builds imaginative but plausible worlds in which climate and “everything” has changed; in so doing it allows us to respond emotionally—with anger, hope, fear, or regret—to the future we are making.”
